A local woman’s resolutions for the New Year include reading one book each week, spending less time on social media, and one feat that’s been on her bucket list since early 2020—to sign up for a marathon in a distant city; train for that event; book a hotel room and purchase airline tickets; and, ultimately, to run 26.2 miles by herself, in her hometown, when the marathon is canceled due to COVID.

“It will be challenging, for sure, but I know I can do it,” said Lucy Van Pelt, 26, a psychiatry student at Brown College. “I got this!”

Van Pelt said she hasn’t yet chosen a race, but is considering marathons in Washington state, California, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Minnesota.

“For almost two years now,” she said, “I’ve watched as friends and coworkers have signed up for marathons, trained for them, booked travel, and then had to run the virtual race, by themselves, after the in-person race gets canceled.”

“And I’m, like, hey—I could do that.”

Van Pelt said that if her marathon goes well, her next goal might be signing up for a triathlon, training for it, booking travel, and eating the registration fee when the event is canceled.
