The 2021 Schrödinger Marathon has been canceled, organizers said over the weekend before adding that the race is still on.

The German event is the latest in a long list of marathons to announce a cancelation, but the only one so far to simultaneously declare that it is still scheduled to take place as planned.

“We regret to announce that we have decided to cancel the 2021 Schrödinger Marathon,” Race Director Erwin Katze said in a video on the event’s website. “At the same time, we are happy to share the news that the 2021 Schrödinger Marathon will go on as scheduled.”

The race will take place Sunday, October 17, when no race will occur.

Katze added that the event has added a virtual option this year, and that this is not an option. In the video, he also spoke to runners who had paid to run the 2020 marathon but didn’t attend in person because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“If you are registered for the 2020 event but did not run, you will receive a full refund,” said Katze. “Also, you will receive nothing.”

Runners were left perplexed.

“So should I book my travel, or not?” Al Einstein, a marathoner in Copenhagen, wrote in a comment to the video.

The event responded with a comment of its own:

“Yes and no.”
