Organizers of the Marine Corps Marathon said today that their regular afternoon walk was “proceeding as planned,” as a grand piano fell from the roof of a 35-story building directly above them.

The piano, a Yamaha S7X, is polished ebony in color and advertised as “suitable for chamber halls.” It weighs 904 pounds. It is unclear how the piano got on the roof or how it came to fall.

“Our after-lunch constitutional has a long and rich history, going back since at least 2006,” the organizers said, “and we see no reason to change our course at this time. Therefore, our walk is still on.”

The organizers said they doubt the piano will present a problem, but that if it does, they have planned for all contingencies.

“Because we prioritize our health and well-being,” they said, “our team has developed a robust safety plan on the outside chance that the piano’s downward course intersects our path of transit.”

That plan, they said, consists of a small nylon umbrella that they will huddle under.

“We continue to monitor the piano situation closely,” they added, “but for now we’re taking a wait-and-see approach.”

At last report the piano had passed the building’s sixth floor.
