This fall’s Marine Corps Marathon is still on, organizers said today from their Quantico, Virginia headquarters, as a colossal asteroid hurtled toward them, darkening not just Virginia but the entire East Coast.

“At this time, preparations for the 2020 Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Weekend are proceeding as planned,” they said. “In addition to the live marathon and ultra events scheduled for Sunday, October 25 in Arlington, Virginia and the nation’s capital, the MCM and MCM50K will now be offered as virtual options as well.”

The asteroid, which astronomers said months ago was headed directly for Earth, is approximately 600 miles wide. Experts predict it will smash into the planet sometime tomorrow afternoon, obliterating not just the Washington metro area but a large swath of the Eastern Seaboard.

Ultimately, they said, the impact event will trigger a mass extinction, ending civilization as we know it. The relative handful of humans who might survive will live a nightmare as they fight and scrape for precious resources and spend their sleepless nights listening to distant cries and wondering whether those killed instantly were the lucky ones.

“The Marine Corps Marathon Organization (MCMO) team has been exploring various approaches and scenarios that prioritize the health and safety of our running community and meet the high standards of the 45th anniversary event,” said Rick Nealis, MCMO director. “Many factors weigh into a runner’s decision to participate in the live event so we are extending new options to support the largest participation in this landmark event whether virtual or in person.”
