Nuun, a maker of hydration products aimed at endurance athletes, said today that it has quietly been testing a COVID-19-vaccine-flavored product and that “early results look very promising.”

“We are very excited,” the company said in a statement. “Phase 1 trials of Nuun Vitamins COVID Vaccine flavor tablets were very encouraging, and we are nearing completion of Phase 2 with every reason to expect a successful rollout.”

The product, Nuun said, contains no actual vaccine. Instead it uses “natural ingredients” to deliver “real vaccine flavor that’s just what the doctor ordered.”

In a footnote, the statement clarifies that no actual doctors have made such an order.

According to the company, 1,200 thirsty subjects were involved in the trial’s early phases; half got a dose of Nuun Vitamins COVID Vaccine flavor tablets, while the rest got a placebo. Afterward, 95% of the subjects in the first group described their thirst as “quenched.”

About 95% of the placebo group also reported quenched thirsts—a finding also mentioned in a footnote.

The statement goes on to say that Nuun Vitamins COVID Vaccine flavor tablets are tasty, vegan, and gluten-free, and that none of its claims have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Assuming that Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials go well, the first doses of Nuun Vitamins COVID Vaccine flavor tablets will be available by spring 2021, the company said, and will retail for $7 per 12-tablet tube.
