A local runner is pining for the days when he could decide on a whim to plan a group run with friends and then decide hours or even minutes before the appointed time to skip it, Dumb Runner has learned.

“It’s a bummer, for sure,” said D.B. Cooper, 26, an aviation consultant who lives alone. “Before the lockdown, I would just text a few buddies on, say, a Friday, arrange to meet them for a Sunday long run or whatever, and then wake up Sunday morning and text them again to say, Sorry, guys, I’m out. Feeling super tired.”

Cooper said he can’t remember the last time he was able to do that.

“It feels like a year,” he said. “Let’s put it that way.”

Instead, said Cooper, he’s been following social distancing rules and running alone—or meaning to, anyway.

“Yesterday, I’d planned to get up early for a solo run,” he said. “When the alarm woke me at 6:30, I was right in the middle of a dream and I hadn’t slept that well and my bed was so warm and nice.”

“I skipped the run and went back to sleep,” he said. “But it just wasn’t the same.”
