A local runner is putting his crafty talents to good use, converting old race medals into face masks for health care workers.

“I’ve been a runner for almost 10 years, so I have this big box full of old finisher medals,” said Peter Frampton, 29. “With all these shortages of masks and stuff lately, I thought, Hey, why not turn them into something useful?

Equipped with several spools of elastic, Krazy Glue, and his pile of medals, Frampton got to work and churned out 20 face masks. They weren’t “perfect,” he said, but they covered his nose and mouth.

“I took them to a nearby hospital,” he said, “and it was so awesome. They were speechless.”

Now, Frampton said, he’s seeking donations of medals from other runners.

“I’d love to make as many of these as possible,” he said. “During a time like this, we all need to do what we can.”
