Local Runner Grateful for Little Wave From Motorist Who Nearly Hit Her

A local runner narrowly avoided being hit this morning by a distracted driver, Dumb Runner has learned, but is feeling grateful for that driver’s brief acknowledgment of her existence.
Katrina Leskanich, 60, was just a few minutes into her four-mile run when the act of kindness occurred, she said.
“I was running along, getting warmed up, when I saw this car approaching a STOP sign at a cross street right ahead of me,” Leskanich said. “And [the driver] just rolled right through it.”
The driver, a middle-aged male, was having a conversation on his phone and “just staring into space,” according to Leskanich.
“He didn’t notice me at all until I yelled,” she said. “At that point, I was close enough to touch him.”
The driver, who never stopped his car or paused his phone conversation, glanced up and briefly waved as he drove down the street.
“I think he might have mouthed the word sorry,” said Leskanich. “But it all happened so fast, I can’t be sure.”
Either way, Leskanich said, she was happy to have a driver register her presence.
“Usually, they don’t,” she said. “And if they do, it’s usually to yell at me or give me the finger”
“So it was really nice to have a motorist—especially a very busy one, like this guy—acknowledge my existence.”
