An undercover agent for the watchdog website Marathon Investigation is off to a promising start at a local marathon, Dumb Runner has learned, having recorded three runners discussing their plans to cheat before the race has even started.

The self-described “narc,” Donald Brasco, 27, is one of a dozen or so agents trained by Marathon Investigation to infiltrate race fields to collect intelligence and identify cheaters. The operation, which began just a month ago, already appears to be paying off.

In a phone interview from the marathon’s starting corral, Brasco confirmed that he has recorded three incriminating statements from fellow runners and expects to get more once the race is under way.

Brasco played some of the recordings for Dumb Runner. Each one begins with Brasco approaching a runner and making small talk.

“Forecast looks good, right?” Brasco says in one. “Anyway … think you’ll do any cheating today?”

The admissions caught on tape include things like cutting the course and accepting a ride from an accomplice in a car, though one runner confessed that she had cheated before she even got there.

“I’m wearing a fake bib,” she told Brasco. “But don’t tell anyone—I’d hate to show up on Marathon Investigation!”
