Local Runner Breaks Stroller Record at Barkley Marathons

A local man is one of three finishers at this year’s Barkley Marathons, Dumb Runner has learned. Adding to the feat, he also set a record as the fastest person to finish the notoriously tough race while pushing a jogging stroller.

The event, which began Tuesday in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, takes competitors over five laps of an unmarked course about 26 miles long, with 63,000 feet of elevation gain. Runners have 60 hours to complete all five loops.

Dan Haggerty, 36, completed the event just four minutes shy of that 60-hour cutoff—all while pushing his 14-month-old daughter, Denver, in a stroller outfitted with off-road tires. He beat the previous stroller record by 90 seconds.

“It got a little bumpy, for sure,” Haggerty said in a finish line interview. “But we got through it.”

“She slept through a lot of it,” he added. “She’s a good sleeper.”

Asked how he kept his daughter occupied during her waking hours, Haggerty laughed.

Bluey cartoons on my phone,” he said. “And a lot of Goldfish.”
