Saucony Cancels Update of Covid 18 Shoe

Saucony has canceled a planned update of its popular Covid shoe, unexpectedly announcing that the current model, the Covid 18, “cannot be improved upon.”

The Covid 19 had been set for a spring 2020 release. Press materials sent late last fall touted the Covid 19’s “midsole HYpER-BLAST™ insets” and “newly engineered Sl@mBANG™ cross plate” among the shoe’s improvements.

“We’ve taken your favorite stability shoe and made it even better,” the materials read, “adding strategic insole cutouts, odor-resistant LAZR-lok™ laces, and laboratory-enhanced fit. If you liked the Covid 18, you’ll love the Covid 19.”

The company’s latest news, by contrast, declares flatly that the Covid 18 is “just fine the way it is.”

The terse statement, sent via email to reporters and retailers, read:

“After much thought, we have decided that our Covid shoe has reached total perfection in its 18th iteration and cannot be improved upon. Therefore, we are canceling our release of the Covid 19. Enjoy your Covid 18’s! Forever!”

The email ended with a note urging recipients to share the message with as many people as possible.

Saucony offered no explanation for the sudden reversal.
