A pair of running shoes began breaking in a new runner today, Dumb Runner has learned, getting their relationship off to an uncomfortable start.

The shoes, Mizauconus SPAZ'm 11’s, took the new runner out for a spin around 8 a.m. and problems arose almost immediately.

“This guy started way too fast,” said the shoes, “and he was wearing these dinky low-cut socks that left his Achilles tendons really exposed.”

“I rubbed them, which slowed him down pretty good.”

The runner in question, 32-year-old Abe Simpson, paused and tried to adjust his socks. But the pain persisted.

“Ow,” he said. “Dammit.”

After running about one mile, a visibly pained Simpson turned around and jogged back home. The shoes said they would try again tomorrow.

“This is normal,” they said. “It always takes a little time to break in a new runner.”

At last report, Simpson was online shopping for taller socks.
