A local runner and his wife are reeling after a recent gift exchange took a cosmically ironic turn, Dumb Runner has learned, leaving them to ponder the nature of gift-giving, material possessions, and love itself.
William Porter, 29, and his wife, Sydney Porter, 26, exchanged the gifts Saturday, which marked their one-year wedding anniversary, sources said. William, a nine-time marathon finisher, gave his wife a set of decorative combs for her flowing, hip-length hair; Sydney had bought her husband a custom-made display rack for his marathon medals.
What the cash-strapped couple didn’t know was that they each had sacrificed something special in order to afford the secret gifts—Sydney had cut and sold her hair, while William had auctioned his medals off on eBay.
“Oh, Henry,” Sydney said upon unwrapping the combs, using her nickname for William.
“Shit,” her husband replied.
Despite the tragicomic twist, sources said, the couple enjoyed their evening and emerged more in love than ever as they realized that, eventually, they would be able to use their gifts, and that in the meantime they had learned some valuable lessons.
“It’s like something out of a movie,” Sydney Porter said.
“Or a book,” William added.
