A local woman surprised her husband today with an unexpected gift, Dumb Runner has learned—an artificial knee that he’s been wanting for almost a year.

Mark Milley, 66, found the metal-alloy-and-plastic joint this morning, in a gift box next to the coffee maker in the couple’s kitchen. A card read, simply, “For Mark, From Hollyanne, XO.”

“I was definitely caught off guard,” Milley said, “because it’s not my birthday, and our wedding anniversary is months away.”

Opening the box as his wife looked on, Milley went from surprised to gleeful.

“Oh my God!” he exclaimed. “Honey! Thank you!”

Milley, a longtime runner, had been eyeing the artificial joint since his own left knee began giving him trouble about 10 months ago. The cost, he said, prevented him from buying it for himself; he tried finding one on eBay, to no avail.

“I was prepared to give up running for good and switch to swimming or biking or something,” he said. “Now, I don’t have to.”

Milley said he still has a few items on his wish list, however.

“I would love to snag a new pair of Achilles tendons,” he said. “Maybe for Christmas.”
