A student driver hit a runner Saturday, Dumb Runner has learned, sending the runner to the hospital with abrasions and three cracked ribs.
The collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. as Helen Shivers, 15, was driving her parents’ four-door sedan with an instructor in the passenger seat. The lesson was uneventful, sources said, until Shivers made a right turn at a stop sign without looking to her right.
That’s when she hit Ray Bronson, 17, as he ran across the intersection. The impact sent Bronson, a classmate of Shivers and a member of their school’s cross-country team, rolling across the hood of Shivers’ car and onto the street.
“Oh my God!” said Shivers. “Whoops.”
Bronson briefly lost consciousness, sources said, but was sitting up and lucid by the time an ambulance arrived. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Shivers apologized before driving away.
Reached later for comment, Shivers told Dumb Runner that she felt terrible about the “accident” but noted that Bronson shared some of the blame.
“I mean, he wasn’t wearing high-visibility clothing or anything,” she said. “He just came out of nowhere.”
