Local Man Sorry For Pointing Out That Wife ‘Barely’ Qualified for Boston

A local man apologized yesterday for pointing out to friends that his wife qualified for this year’s Boston Marathon by a razor-thin margin, Dumb Runner has learned — an offhand remark that cast a pall over their late-morning brunch.

Alice Kramden, 37, qualified for Boston with a 3:34:46 at the 2022 Gleason (Missouri) Marathon, whose flat course is advertised as “BQ friendly”; the Boston qualifying time for women in her age group is 3:35:00 or faster.

The topic came up when Trixie Norton, half of the other brunch couple, asked Alice whether she felt ready for her first Boston Marathon, just two weeks away. When Alice replied that she was, and that she still couldn’t believe she qualified, her husband laughed.

Barely qualified,” he said, finishing his third mimosa. “I mean, wow, it was close.”

“If she hadn’t been wearing those carbon-plated shoes,” he added, “I don’t know...”

Alice Kramden, who then excused herself from the table, returned a few minutes later and signaled their server for the check.

“Honey, I’m sorry,” Ralph Kramden told his wife at home afterward. “It was a dumb thing to say, I didn’t mean it.”

At last report, the two were exploring options for couples counseling.
