A local man’s wife has lost her desire to run with him, Dumb Runner has learned, and the man worries what that might mean for their relationship.

“We used to run together every day,” said Tom Ewell, 38, referring to Evelyn Keyes, 35, his wife of seven years. “Now I’m lucky if we do it once a week.”

“And it’s always me who initiates it,” he added. “I can’t remember the last time my wife approached me and expressed interest in a run.”

When they do run together, Ewell said, it’s clear that his wife is “just going through the motions.”

“She’s there, physically,” he said. “But her heart isn’t in it. Lately, during our runs, I’ve even been catching her looking at her phone. It’s so frustrating.”

It wasn’t always this way, Ewell stressed.

“When we first started dating, we would run together all the time. Sometimes twice in one day. Evelyn was always up for a run—morning, noon, or night. Long run, tempo, speedwork, or just a quick three miles. She was an animal.”

Today, he said, after seven years of marriage and two children, that all seems like ancient history.

“I do worry about it,” said Ewell. “Will things ever get back to the way they were, or is this the new normal? Is there something I can or should be doing differently? Should I suggest we both try couples coaching? I don’t know.”

Evelyn Keyes, who was tired, was unavailable for comment.
