World record holder Eliud Kipchoge stopped midway through today’s Berlin Marathon for a haircut en route to a new world record—a show of strength and confidence that race commentators described as “ballsy.”

Kipchoge, 37, won the race in 2:01:09, bettering his own world record time of 2:01:39, set four years ago in the same race, cementing his status as the greatest marathon runner of all time.

The haircut stop, apparently unscheduled, happened around mile 14 of the 26.2-mile race. Sources said Kipchoge veered unexpectedly off the course and “ducked in” to a nearby barber shop.

“I do not have an appointment,” Kipchoge reportedly said. “Can you fit me in?”

A stylist replied that he could indeed accommodate the running legend, and ushered him to an open chair.

“The haircut itself didn’t take long,” said a source who requested anonymity. “I mean, his hair was pretty short already. And he skipped the washing and rinsing.”

Kipchoge departed a few minutes later, the source said, after leaving a “very generous” tip and joining the stylist for a selfie, and rejoined the race, going on to win handily in a world’s best time.

Reaction to the pit stop on social media was mixed.

“Totally unnecessary,” wrote one Twitter user. “This is just, like, taunting.”

“If there was ever any doubt (there wasn’t), Kipchoge is the absolute GOAT,” wrote another. “Who else could pull this off?”

“And,” the user added, “his hair looks great.”
