In Spirit of Goodwill, Motorist Gives Runner One Middle Finger Instead of Usual Two

A local motorist this morning “flipped the bird” to a runner, but using just one middle finger rather than the usual two, Dumb Runner has learned.

Charlie Parker, 31, was driving home from a supermarket around 9 a.m. when he encountered the unnamed runner. The runner, according to Parker, was “jogging in the middle of the road, like those guys always do.”

Normally, said Parker, he would extend two hands out of his car window, executing what he called a “double bird” to express his contempt.

“I have this technique where I’m able, momentarily, to steer with my knees so I can use both hands for giving the finger,” he said. “It works pretty good.”

This time, however, Parker had second thoughts.

“These are weird times, you know?” he said. “Like, suddenly we’re all sort of in the same boat, facing this global emergency thing, and we’re all just trying to hang in there.”

In that spirit, Parker said, he opted to show the runner just a single middle finger. Also, he didn’t use his horn.

“In fact,” he said, “I also briefly gave the guy a thumbs up with the other hand, but that hand was sort of also holding the wheel, so he might not have seen that.”

“It was a nice moment. We’re all in this together.”
