A local man today bemoaned the fact that his gym had been closed for weeks, leaving him without access to a treadmill.

“I really miss running,” said Ted Striker, 30, noting that he did not own a treadmill at his home. “I just wish there was some sort of way I could do it on my own, outside the gym.”

Striker said he’d been a member of the gym, Macho Grande Fitness, for three years and had come to rely on its equipment and amenities to maintain his workout regimen.

“I used to go three, four times a week,” Striker said via phone from his home, minutes from a trailhead at Oveur Park, a 6,400-acre preserve with groomed, well-marked trails; several large waterfalls; and stunning views of Mt. McCroskey.

“Now I just sit at home and watch Netflix.”

The facility, a seven-mile drive from Striker’s home, closed in early April because of the coronavirus pandemic. It is unclear when it might reopen, but Striker hopes it’s soon.

“I can’t wait to get back to running,” he said.
