Hackers compromised a major U.S. energy gel pipeline Sunday, Dumb Runner has learned, shutting it down and demanding an undisclosed sum to return it to operation. The attack threatened the fuel supply to millions of endurance athletes and spurred panic buying across several states.

It remains unclear when the pipeline will reopen.

“An unknown group compromised the internal computer network of GU Energy Labs and, at some point late Saturday or early Sunday, assumed control of our main pipeline,” Robert Del Naja, a GU spokesperson, said in a statement. “We are in communications with a representative of the group to resolve the situation.”

The pipeline runs nearly 3,500 miles from Texas to New York, carrying more than a million barrels of energy gel per day.

As news of the shutdown spread, anxious runners scrambled to purchase GU wherever they could find it.

“Heck yes, I’m worried,” said Andrew Vowles, 35, a runner in Richmond, Virginia, camped out at his local running store hours before it opened this morning. “I don’t know how long this is going to last, so I’m buying as much as they’ll sell me.”

“Can’t run without fuel,” he added.
