Local Runner Deals With Holiday Weight Gain by Not Giving a Shit

A local runner is navigating the perils of holiday weight gain by not giving a shit, Dumb Runner has learned—an approach that she says has worked well for her in the past.

“Every year I gain a few pounds in November and December, and every year I go back to my usual weight sometime in January or February,” said Avery Dupois, 38, in a video chat from her living room, sipping a large mug of hot cocoa. “It’s not a big deal.”

Dupois, who has been a runner for most of her adult life, said that every year she sees articles, videos, and social media posts offering tips and tactics for avoiding holiday weight gain, and every year she ignores them, usually while eating a slice of pie or pouring herself another glass of wine.

“I just don’t get it,” she said. “I mean, yeah, my weight goes up a bit at the end of the year—so what? It all works itself out in the end.”

“Here’s my strategy for dealing with holiday weight gain: Not giving a shit. Not a single one.”

Asked whether she would recommend her approach to other runners, Dupois ate a gingerbread cookie.
