A local woman is “so happy” for a close friend who last weekend ran a 1 hour 40 minute half-marathon with virtually no preparation, Dumb Runner has learned.

Edith Wharton, 27, a longtime runner herself, learned of her friend’s accomplishment yesterday, as the two chatted in Wharton’s home.

“It was such a last-minute thing,” said the friend, identified as Willa Cather, 26, describing her decision to enter the event just days before the race date. “But I figured, Why not?

Cather, whose running résumé consists entirely of two 5Ks and a handful of short, easy jogs over the past few years, told Wharton the race was “a lot of fun” and much easier than she’d expected.

“I would have liked to have run 1:30,” she said, “but I’ll take a 1:40, given that I did it on no training.”

Wharton, listening to Cather’s oral race report, remained silent throughout, speaking only after Cather had shown her a finish line photo of herself posing with her finisher’s medal.

“Wow,” Wharton said. “That’s great.”

“Good for you,” she added.

Reached by phone yesterday, Wharton reiterated how pleased she was for Cather.

“I mean, yeah, I’ve been running for almost six years and have trained my brains out trying to break 2 hours in the half-marathon, which I still haven’t done, by the way,” said Wharton. “But sure, I’m thrilled.”

At last report, Cather was overheard telling another friend that she wasn’t sore at all and was considering running a full marathon sometime soon.
