A local woman says she could complete a marathon if she “really wanted to,” despite never having run more than 4 miles at a time, Dumb Runner has learned.

Grace Kelly, 27, made the assertion Sunday during a discussion with her roommate, Jayne Mansfield, 29. Mansfield is a longtime runner and a veteran of five marathons; Kelly’s running experience consists of one season of track in high school and four turkey trots ranging in distance from 5K to four miles.

The topic arose when Mansfield mentioned a mutual friend who had recently finished a virtual marathon.

“I’ve been thinking about doing a marathon,” Kelly said. “I mean, I’m sure I could, if I really wanted to. I’m in pretty good shape.”

Mansfield reportedly thought of several possible responses to that statement, but said nothing.

“Probably, if I had to, I could go out and run 13 miles right now,” Kelly continued. “It wouldn’t be easy, but all you need to do is just keep going, right?”

“And then, you just do that (distance) again,” she added. “And that’s a marathon.”

Mansfield excused herself to get a drink of water just as Kelly began pondering an Ironman Triathlon.

“That’s a marathon plus some swimming and biking, right?” she said. “I could probably do that, too. If I wanted.”
