Strava Explains Recent Price Hike: ‘We Want More Money’

Reeling from the backlash after an unannounced price increase last week, Strava today released a statement explaining the move.

“We want more money,” read the statement, published on the company’s blog. “We apologize if that wasn’t clear in our initial communications.”

Founded in 2009, Strava touts itself as “the largest sports community in the world,” claiming that “over 100 million athletes in 195 countries” use the social networking app.

As first reported by BikeRadar.com:

… Strava has increased the monthly subscription cost for premium users from £6.99 to £8.99 in the UK, representing a 28 per cent rise. Some pay-monthly users have also reported paying £5.99 previously, with the new monthly price reflecting a 50 per cent increase. …

Users immediately took to social media to protest not just the rate hike, but the way Strava communicated it—with no real warning and a lack of explanation. The company’s latest statement attempts to address that anger.

Here is that statement in full:

Why we did what we did

Our recent changes have clearly struck a nerve, so we want to share why and how we decided to raise our prices.

Late in 2022, Strava’s leadership team met in one of our tastefully appointed meeting rooms. We had a bunch of papers with rows and columns of data. We discussed how much money the company had, and how much money we wish the company had.

We quickly realized that the former number was significantly smaller than the latter number. And so we decided to get more money from you, our customers.

So, simply put: We want more money. We apologize if that wasn’t clear in our initial communications.

Dumb Runner made no attempts to contact Strava for comment, because Dumb Runner has never used Strava and probably never will, so honestly doesn’t care all that much.
