The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) and Dunkin’ today announced a joint promotion, starting in April, in which Dunkin’ customers will earn a free Boston Marathon Finisher’s Medal with any purchase.

It is believed to be the first time ever a major marathon has partnered with a purveyor of coffee and doughnuts. Pellegrini noted that the promotion is tied to the event’s 125th running this fall.

“We are pleased to team up with another Massachusetts institution, Dunkin’, to welcome more people to the sport of running,” said Margaret Pellegrini, a spokesperson for the B.A.A. “A Boston Marathon Finisher’s Medal is among the most coveted objects in our sport, and starting soon there will be a delicious new way to get one.”

Dunkin’, formerly known as Dunkin’ Donuts, was founded in Massachusetts and is still based there.

“As far as the B.A.A. is concerned, when it comes to folks with Boston Marathon Finisher’s Medals, the more, the merrier,” she said.

The announcement comes a day after a photo of the actor and director Ben Affleck, sipping a Dunkin’ Frozen Matcha Latte and wearing a Boston Marathon medal, went viral. Pellegrini, the B.A.A. spokesperson, said she couldn’t explain that.

“Our Dunkin’ promotion hasn’t begun yet,” she said, “so I couldn’t speculate as to where Mr. Affleck got his medal.”

“Maybe he just bought it or something.”

The Dunkin’ giveaway is good while supplies last, Pellegrini added, noting that the B.A.A. has shipped 320,000 medals to Dunkin’ locations nationwide.
