Guy Who Didn’t Want to Get Out of Bed for 6 a.m. Run But Did It Anyway Named Time Person of the Year

In a surprising choice, Time magazine has named Guy Who Didn’t Want to Get Out of Bed for 6 a.m. Run But Did It Anyway its Person of the Year for 2021.

“For nearly a century, Time has named a Person of the Year—the individual or group who most shaped the previous 12 months, for better or for worse,” Edward Felsenthal, editor in chief and CEO of Time, wrote in making the announcement this week. “This year, we have broken the mold by naming someone who hasn’t influenced events, per se, but who personifies them.”

“That person is Guy Who Didn’t Want to Get Out of Bed for 6 a.m. Run But Did It Anyway.”

Guy Who Didn’t Want to Get Out of Bed for 6 a.m. Run But Did It Anyway, Felsenthal explained, “reflects not just the mental and emotional exhaustion we all have felt this past year—who among us hasn’t struggled to get out of our warm, comfortable beds, whether literal or metaphorical?—but also the human capacity to face that challenge and to overcome it by sheer force of will.”

Reached for comment, Guy Who Didn’t Want to Get Out of Bed for 6 a.m. Run But Did It Anyway told Dumb Runner he was surprised and honored to be named Person of the Year. He also said he’s glad he got up and ran, rather than sleeping in.

“I got a solid six miles in,” he said. “It was good.”
