A local man out for a midday run was forced to guess at a driver’s intent when he came to a four-way stop and met a pickup truck with tinted windows, Dumb Runner has learned.

The darkened windows, sources said, turned an ordinary street crossing into a thrilling game of chance—a modern-day version of the mythical Sphinx, which challenged travelers with a riddle and devoured those who could not answer.

“Devilish!” said the runner, Lewis Meriwether, 33. “Is this guy waiting for me to cross? Or just about to step on the gas? It’s impossible to tell.”

He paused, squinting into the inky blackness of the driver’s side window.

“Is he even looking in this direction?”

As Meriwether weighed his options, witnesses said, the truck sat idling like an impenetrable, 375-horsepower enigma. Muffled music emanated from its cab.

“I know there’s someone in there,” Meriwether said, “because I saw the truck roll up to the stop sign.”

“And I know I have the right of way,” he continued, stroking his chin. “But if the driver can’t see me, that doesn’t matter.”

After another moment of uncertainty, Meriwether jogged into the intersection. The truck surged forward then stopped abruptly, blasting its horn.

Meriwether waved at the driver and continued on his way.
