When Haley Osment left her home one recent morning for a three-mile jog, she wasn’t expecting to find true love or a bloated corpse. But she found both.

Osment, 34, was about halfway through her run in a nearby park when, she said, she noticed something odd behind some bushes.

“At first I thought it was just a shoe,” she said. “Then I looked closer and realized the shoe was on a foot, and the foot belonged to a disheveled-looking man who was lying there, face down.”

Because she was in a remote area of the park, Osment said, she approached the man cautiously and tried to rouse him, first by calling out to him and then by poking him with a stick.

“It became obvious that this man was dead,” she said. “He was all puffy and blue.”

The grim discovery didn’t rattle Osment—as a jogger, she said, she’s discovered plenty of dead bodies over the years—but what happened next threw her for a loop.

“I called 911, to make a report,” she recalled. “Literally within a few minutes, a police detective showed up—and wow, it was love at first sight.”

The chemistry, Osment said, was undeniable.

“I was seriously having trouble answering his questions,” she said. “He assumed it was because I was upset, but really I was just distracted by his beautiful eyes.”

The feeling, as it turned out, was mutual—the two eventually exchanged phone numbers and had their first date two nights later, during which they learned they both are the youngest of four children, attended the same state university, and share a love for ballroom dancing.

“It just goes to show, you never know what life has in store for you,” said Osment, who added that she and her new boyfriend are already planning a romantic weekend getaway.

Asked about the deceased man she’d discovered, Osment shrugged.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I guess he was homeless or something.”
