Here’s a feel-good story for you: A local runner found a wallet containing $450 in cash—and tracked down its owner to return the wallet with its contents almost entirely intact.

Bonnie Parker, 26, was running Saturday morning at the Barrow Nature Preserve when she spotted the wallet on a dirt trail, lying open, and immediately snatched it up.

“I looked around but didn’t see anyone,” Parker told Dumb Runner in a phone interview. “So I checked the contents.”

In addition to a driver’s license, credit cards, and a library card, Parker said, she counted $450 in cash, in twenties and fifties.

“I was, like, Whoa!” she said. “That’s a lot of money!”

Parker said she didn’t think twice about her next course of action.

“I knew I had to return the wallet—including the cash, minus a little taste for myself,” she said.

Parker didn’t see anyone else for the remainder of her run, she said, and no one in the parking lot afterward had lost a wallet. So she took her find home and tracked down its grateful owner via an online search.

“He was so happy to get his wallet back,” she said. “And I felt good, too.”

Parker said the wallet’s owner offered her a $50 reward for her good deed, but she declined it.

“Knowing that I did the right thing, and that I’d tucked a twenty into my pocket, was enough reward for me,” she said. “That’s just how I was raised.”
