‘At Least My Shoes Are Super,’ Sad Runner Tells Self

A local runner found solace today in the knowledge that his carbon-plated running shoes are amazing, even if nothing else in his life is.

“At least my shoes are super,” Warren Evans, 33, reportedly whispered to himself as he gazed out a window at a bleak winter landscape whose cold, grim grayness reflected his own interior state.

Evans owns at least two pairs of so-called “super shoes,” a source said—one from Nike, the other from Hoka—in addition to several pairs of regular running shoes. He has always loved them, said the source, but lately they’ve come to feel almost like a lifeline.

“Warren has been in a pretty bad place lately,” according to Jack Fenwick, a longtime friend. “He had to move back in with his parents a few months ago, when he lost his job, and shortly after that his partner dumped him.”

In addition, Fenwick said, earlier this month Evans’ cat, Mr. Whiskers, died.

Evans was coping fairly well with all of it, Fenwick added, until he twisted his ankle on a run last week, sidelining him indefinitely.

“That was sort of the last straw, I think,” said Fenwick. “Ever since then, he’s been moping around the house, sleeping a lot, that sort of thing.”

“And, you know, looking at his carbon-plated shoes.”

Reached for comment, Evans sighed.
