2022 Boston Marathon Jacket Pays Homage to B.A.A. Unicorn
/Adidas this week unveiled the official 2022 Boston Marathon celebration jacket, a “Victory Blue”/purple/green model with one unprecedented feature—a unicorn horn affixed to its hood.
“Introducing the 2022 @adidas Boston Marathon celebration jacket,” read a tweet from the marathon’s Twitter account. “In honor of the unicorn, the longtime symbol of the Boston Athletic Association.”
The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), a non-profit organization, organizes the Boston Marathon. On its website’s FAQ page, the B.A.A. says it is “likely that the Unicorn was borrowed from the coat of arms from one of the B.A.A.'s first families. … (T)he now iconic Unicorn stands for striving for excellence.... even if it can never be achieved.”
The 2022 official jacket is thought to be the first ever to include a horn of any kind.
Reaction to the design on social media was mixed, ranging from enthusiasm to bafflement.
“I love it!” wrote one runner in an Instagram comment. “I’ll def rock that!”
“More horn pls,” tweeted another.
“The haters need to back the [expletive] down,” said a Boston Marathon veteran in one Facebook thread. “#DontScornTheHorn.”
The jacket retails for $120.
