Traveling Runner Overwhelmed With Options at Hotel Fitness Center

A local runner was “overwhelmed” by the exercise equipment options arrayed before her at a hotel last weekend, Dumb Runner has learned, and couldn’t believe that she had them all to herself.

“I was stunned,” said Martha Davis, 35, recalling the moment she opened the door to her hotel’s empty, windowless fitness center and saw not one but two treadmills, plus a recumbent exercise bike and a stairclimber—and a flat-screen TV on the wall. “I was, like, My God, all this, just for me?

“And that was just the cardio equipment,” she added, noting that she also saw a rack of free weights and a jump rope.

Davis, an avid runner who is training for a half-marathon, said she had trouble deciding where to start.

“I’m not used to such abundance, so it was tough,” she said. “Do I choose the first treadmill? The second one? The bike? The stairclimber? It was a real embarrassment of riches.”

“I mean, I couldn’t believe the place wasn’t packed.”

Davis said she helped herself to a paper cone of water from a water cooler while she mulled her options.

“The treadmill was the obvious choice,” she said, “but maybe too obvious, if you know what I mean.”

In the end, Davis said, she warmed up on one treadmill, doing five minutes of brisk walking, before moving to the second treadmill (“Why not?” she remembers telling herself) for 30 minutes of running, then cooling down with 10 easy minutes on the stairclimber.

“It was amazing,” she said, despite the fact that she couldn’t find the remote control for the TV, so was unable to watch anything during her workout. “Like an all-you-can-eat cardio buffet.”

“I was super glad I decided to spring for the Marriott.”
