A local man who followed a “Couch to 5K” training program to finish his first 5K race is back on his couch, Dumb Runner has learned, with no intention of running ever again
“I wanted to run a 5K, and now I’ve done it,” said Pierre Tubbs, 29, in a video call from his living room. “I went from my couch to a 5K, just like the plan said, and now I’ve returned to my couch.”
“It’s a beautiful thing, if you think about it,” he said. “Symmetry, full circle, cycle of life, you know?”
Told that many people who follow the Couch to 5K plan use it as a springboard into a lifetime of running, Tubbs shrugged.
“More power to ’em,” he said. “But that’s not for me.”
Tubbs, a software engineer, said he’s never been athletic and, while he felt a sense of accomplishment as he crossed that 5K finish line, he was content never to run another step.
“It kind of sucked, to be frank,” he said. “I was hurting pretty much the whole time.”
Tubbs contrasted that experience with sitting on his couch, a soft sectional with lots of pillows, which he described as “insanely comfortable.”
“I’ve got some food, a cold drink, endless stuff to stream on TV,” he said. “What more could a guy want?”
