Everything Going Well in Days Leading Up to Marathon, Local Runner Says—a Little TOO Well

A local runner is feeling strong, healthy, and well-rested in the final few days before his marathon, Dumb Runner has learned—and it’s making him extremely nervous.
“Things are going so well, it’s, like, almost too perfect, you know?” said Louis Jolliet, 28, who plans to run his fifth marathon this Sunday. “I keep waiting for something—anything—to happen and foul things up.”
In each of his previous marathon training cycles, Jolliet said, he’s faced some snafu or another in the week or so leading up to race day, from minor illnesses to a sprained ankle. In contrast, he said, this time it’s “all systems go.”
“My training was great; I missed maybe two workouts over the four-month plan,” he said. “And my taper has been uneventful.”
“Ditto for my nutrition, my overall health, my shoes and gear,” he added. “Everything has been flawless, and I’m feeling great.”
As a result, Jolliet said, he’s navigating these final few days prerace in a state of constant hypervigilance, on the lookout for anything that could derail his months of careful preparation, whether that might be a minor car crash, a stomach bug, or an air-conditioner falling on him as he walks down a sidewalk.
“I’ve never felt more prepared for a marathon,” he said, “and I don’t know how to deal with it.”
“Frankly it sucks.”
