A local influencer eschews traditional sports nutrition products such as energy bars, chews, and gels, opting instead to fuel her runs with “the power of Nilla,” Dumb Runner has learned.

Natalie Merchant, 26, said she “fell in love” with the unconventional fueling method earlier this year, when she became a brand ambassador for Nabisco, a manufacturer of cookies, chips, and other snacks, including Nilla Wafers.

Merchant, a veteran of eight 5Ks and one half-marathon, is a part-time barista and self-described online influencer, with several thousand followers on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.

“Like many of you, I used to carb-load with pasta before my runs, slurp down gels during, and recover afterward with a protein bar,” she wrote in one recent social media post. “Not anymore. Now I tap into #ThePowerOfNilla, and I’ll never go back!!!”

Replying to a comment on the post, Merchant assured a reader that, “Yes, Nilla Wafers are a WONDERFUL source of nilla.”

A brief video accompanying the post shows Merchant running on an outdoor track with a fistful of Nilla Wafers, shoving several of the golden cookies into her mouth with the other hand.

“Nilla life!” she shouts, her mouth full of cookies.

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Nabisco confirmed that the company’s Nilla Wafers are an excellent source of fuel for athletes of all kinds, as well as being delicious and wholesome.

Nilla Wafers retail for about $5 per 11-ounce box and are available in stores nationwide.
