New Runner Still in That Awkward Phase

A local man who took up running a few months ago is “still in that awkward phase,” Dumb Runner has learned, as he navigates his new life stage.

Samuel Harold Weir, 34, began running over the summer, sources said, after he quit drinking and decided to make exercise a regular part of his life.

“We all applauded him,” said one source, who requested anonymity. “It’s not easy to make major changes like that, and we told him so.”

Weir has made good on his pledge, the source said, running at least three times a week—but while he’s been consistent, he’s obviously still learning the ropes.

“Like with anything, there’s a learning curve [with running],” they said. “And Sam is clearly still in that awkward phase where his body is changing and he’s having to deal with it in real time.”

Weir’s struggles, the source said, are both physical and social.

“His form could use some work,” they said, noting that they have seen Weir literally trip over his own feet. “And he’s still super-shy about talking to other runners.”

“But we’re all rooting for him, and confident that he’ll grow out of it.”

Experts agree with that sentiment.

“New runners always go through an awkward phase,” said Neal Schweiber, M.D., a sports physiologist in Chippewa, Michigan. “It’s a natural part of their development, as their bodies and minds change in ways that can be weird or even a little scary.”

“I’m sure Mr. Weir will develop into a healthy, mature runner,” he said. “It just takes time.”
