A local runner has a tattoo on the back of his left calf depicting a runner with an Ironman calf tattoo, Dumb Runner has learned—and nobody is quite sure how to interpret it.

Milo Croton, 38, got the tattoo a few months ago, sources said, despite never having done an Ironman event. In fact, they said, it’s unclear whether Croton has ever completed a triathlon of any distance.

“It’s a little mystifying,” said one runner who knows Croton well and who requested anonymity. “He isn’t a triathlon guy at all, so I’m not sure what he’s going for.”

The source added that Croton hasn’t offered much by way of explanation, either, even when asked directly about his tattoo.

“He just sort of grins, you know?” he said. “Sometimes he’ll say, ‘Ironman!’ and laugh.”

That behavior squares with one popular theory behind the tattoo, which is that the whole thing is a joke.

“I do think he got it ironically,” said another friend of Croton’s. “Milo has a pretty dry, sarcastic sense of humor.”

Croton has published photos of his tattoo on his Instagram and Facebook pages, the friend added, speculating that he finds sharing his meta tattoo on Meta platforms deeply amusing.

Reached for comment, Croton laughed.

“Ironman!” he said.
