Trail Runner Weirded Out by Sign That Mentions Her by Name

A local runner was “really weirded out” Sunday by a trailside warning sign that mentioned her by name, Dumb Runner has learned, but finished her run without incident.
The sign appeared on the Jonas Berggren Trail in Asa Base State Park, a popular destination for runners, hikers, and cyclists; the runner, Susan, said she runs there at least twice a month. (Dumb Runner is withholding Susan’s full name to avoid identifying her to whoever made the sign, though, come to think of it, they probably know her identity anyway, if they made a sign targeting her specifically.)
“WARNING,” the sign read. “STAY ON TRAIL, SUSAN.”
“I did a double-take when I first saw it,” Susan said. “I thought maybe I was seeing things, but I was only about three miles into my run at that point—not long enough to be hallucinating or anything.”
After examining the sign closely for a few moments, Susan said, she continued her run, uneasily.
“I was running alone, so I was really weirded out,” she said. “I mean, who wouldn’t be? It was creepy.”
In fact, Susan said, it was so creepy, she returned to the trail later with a friend to show him the sign.
“And that time, all it said was, “WARNING: STAY ON TRAIL,” she said. “But with a smiley face sticker on it.”
“I don’t think I’m going to run there anymore.”
