A local runner is in for a very long day, Dumb Runner has learned.

The runner, identified as Daniel Plainview, 31, was spotted with a bloody singlet just three miles into the Lewis Marathon in Anderson, New Mexico—with more than 23 miles to go.

“Ouch,” said William Bandy, a spectator who winced as he saw Plainview pass the three-mile marker. “This dude has his work cut out for him.”

“Hang in there, buddy!” he shouted.

Plainview, staring straight ahead, did not respond.

Blood on a runner’s shirt generally indicates badly chafed nipples. While not uncommon among marathoners, it’s very unusual to experience that kind of trauma so early in a race. It remains unclear how or why Plainview’s nipples were in such rough shape just a few miles into the event.

“Maybe he has super sensitive nipples?” speculated another spectator, who requested anonymity. “Or maybe he’s, like, one of those ultra runner types who run the course backward and then turn around and run the actual race?”

“I don’t know,” the spectator said. “In any case, yikes.”

Reached for comment around mile five, Plainview wept.
