A young podiatrist got his first in-person look at the feet of a marathon runner, Dumb Runner has learned—an experience that sent him running for the nearest trash can, where he vomited.

“You see photos in textbooks, you know, in school,” said John Nolan, D.P.M., who began his podiatry career just a few months ago. “But it’s not the same.”

It’s not the same,” he repeated, in a whisper. “Nothing prepares you for that.”

Unable to continue the examination, Nolan left the room; a more experienced podiatrist took his place and, afterward, offered his rookie colleague some encouragement.

“It gets better,” he said. “Eventually, you get used to it.”

The runner, who was not identified, was reportedly unfazed.

“This isn’t the first time someone has thrown up after seeing my feet,” she said. “And it probably won’t be the last.”
