The first reader comment on a recent article about transgender athletes precisely matched the expectations of the woman reading it, Dumb Runner has learned.

“Oh my God,” said Estella Havisham, 37, a local runner, as she read the comment. “Ugh.”

The article in question, published on a website aimed at triathletes, outlined changes regarding the eligibility of transgender women to compete in the women’s division of Ironman events.

In a phone interview, Havisham told Dumb Runner that she “knew immediately” what to expect from the article’s reader comments — and that a quick glance at the Facebook comments module following the article confirmed that expectation.

“It was, just… I mean, Jesus,” Havisham said. “Why do I even look?”

The second reader comment, she said, was substantially the same as the first.

At last report, Havisham had clicked through one reader comment to review the commenter’s Facebook page, which was also exactly what she expected.
