‘Crazy Long Line’ at Dunkin’ Prompts McGillivray to Delay Boston Marathon Start

The start of the Boston Marathon today was delayed by almost 30 minutes because Race Director Dave McGillivray was stuck in an unexpectedly long line at a local Dunkin’ Donuts, Dumb Runner has learned.

McGillivray communicated the delay to his staff via a series of text messages that appeared to reflect his increasing impatience. The precise location of the Dunkin’ Donuts was unclear.

“Aw cripes line is crazy long,” read the first text, sent at 8:31 a.m. Eastern. The text included a photo of the line. “Hope it moves fast. U guys want anything?”

The line did not move fast, due in part to one patron in front of McGillivray placing an order for four dozen doughnuts, a box of Munchkins, and three boxes of coffee.

“Gotta be kidding me,” McGillivray texted at 8:42. “This guy is asking for like a thousand donuts. [angry face emoji] Tell everyone the race is delayed for like 30 mins.”

“I’m next!!!” McGillivray texted again, at 8:55. “Be there in 20.”

McGillivray left the Dunkin’ around 9:04, according to a witness, balancing four large coffees on a box of doughnuts. The marathon had been scheduled to start at 9:02 a.m. with the men’s wheelchair division.

“On my way,” he wrote in his final text, at 9:06.

Reports that McGillivray ate the entire box of doughnuts en route to Hopkinton could not be verified.
