Confused Runner Shows Up at Toyotathon

A runner who showed up at a local auto dealership Saturday expecting a foot race instead found a year-end sales event, Dumb Runner has learned.

Dan Fogelman, 32, called the name of the event—“Toyotathon”—misleading and confusing, blaming the dealership’s management for wasting his time.

“I see the suffix -thon, and I think running,” said Fogelman, a veteran of four marathons and nine half-marathons. “Not great deals on my favorite Toyota autos, with incentives like cash back, 0% APR on select SUVs, sedans, compacts, and trucks, and special lease deals.”

“Why couldn’t they call it ‘Toyota End-of-the-Year Sale’ or something like that?” he added.

Fogelman appeared at the dealership shortly after it opened at 7 a.m. dressed in running gear, warmed up and ready to race. Instead, he said, a salesperson beckoned him over to a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid.

“I tried telling the guy I was there to run, not to enjoy unbelievable savings on Toyota’s most popular models,” Fogelman said. “He just laughed.”

Fogelman, who jogged a few laps around the lot before running home, warned other runners not to make the same mistake he did.

“Next time you see a commercial with a lady telling you to ‘hurry in’ for an event ending in -thon,” he said, “don’t hurry. Take your time and check the fine print.”
