An unnamed man shouted, “Run, Forrest!” to a local couple during their run this morning, prompting uncontrollable laughter that still has not subsided.

Mark and Patricia McCloskey were just a few minutes into their run when the bystander offered up the witticism, a line from 1994’s Forrest Gump. That film traces the life of a sweet but dimwitted man with a knack for appearing, Zelig-like, in the background of key historical moments and who at one point runs across the United States because he “just felt like running.”

“Run, Forrest!” screamed the man when he spotted the McCloskeys on the other side of the street. “Run!”

The zinger, said Patricia McCloskey, had her and her husband in stitches.

“We were laughing so hard, we actually had to stop for a minute,” she said when reached by phone, still giggling. “I was like, What? Forrest Gump? Oh my God!

Mark McCloskey laughed so hard, he said, he nearly hyperventilated.

“I had to bend over, hands on my knees,” he said. “It was just too funny. Where do people come up with this stuff?”

Eventually the two resumed their run, after giving the anonymous comedian a round of applause. But they weren’t done laughing.

“We couldn’t stop chuckling,” said Patricia McCloskey. “Every time we were able to calm down, Mark would cup his hands around his mouth and shout, ‘Run, Forrest!’ and we’d both be right back where we started, laughing out loud.”

“I wish every run could be that fun.”
