A local runner completed 50 marathons in 50 days, raising nearly $350,000 for Alzheimer’s research in the process, Dumb Runner has learned, which would be an open-and-shut inspirational story if he weren’t also an agent for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which he is.
The runner, who wore a face mask and refused to identify himself, ran his 50th and final marathon Sunday in Chicago, finishing in 4 hours 22 minutes and glaring at the “Mexican-looking” volunteer who draped a finisher’s medal around his neck as he asked where she was born.
In a postrace interview, the runner described the challenges of running a marathon every day for 50 consecutive days while holding down a full-time job.
“It was hard, I’m not going to lie,” he said, “running that much while also spending at least eight hours a day as an armed, unidentified masked federal agent targeting people with brown skin and abducting them, sometimes in front of their terrified children, dragging them into unmarked vehicles, and then detaining them indefinitely without access to lawyers.”
“But Alzheimer’s is such a terrible disease,” he added. “Every step of the way, that was my focus.”
Over the course of his journey, the runner said, he raised $344,188 for the Fight Alzheimer’s Fund, which supports research into the disease.
Reached for comment, a spokesman for that group told Dumb Runner that they were grateful for the gift and “in awe of” the runner’s feat.
“The fight to end Alzheimer’s is indeed a marathon, not a sprint,” the spokesman said, “and this generous contribution will go a long way toward helping us reach the finish line.”
Told that the runner was an ICE agent, the spokesman paused for several moments.
“Seriously?” he said.
“Well, shit.”
