Noticing his community’s growing homeless population, the owner of a local specialty running store decided to do something about it, donating 10 pairs of Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 shoes to a homeless shelter.

“I just couldn’t sit back and continue doing nothing,” said Jack Lucas, owner of Runner’s Zone. “So I decided to help in the only way I know how—by providing community members with awesome running shoes.”

The ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2, which retails for $250, “combines an industry-leading ZoomX midsole with a full-length carbon fiber plate to create one of the fastest racing shoes to date,” according to the product description. The shoes have a heel stack of 40 mm and forefoot stack of 32 mm, for an offset of 8 mm.

Lucas noted that this update of the shoe improves over the previous version with a stronger mesh upper and overlays that contribute to a more secure fit.

“These are some sweet shoes,” Lucas said, adding that “everyone deserves world-class performance and amazing energy return—including the least fortunate among us.”

Henry Sagan, director of Fisher House, the downtown shelter that received the windfall, said he was grateful for the donation.

“These certainly are impressive shoes,” he said. “Very… uh… expensive.”

Asked for his thoughts on the new shoes, a man outside the shelter who identified himself as “Parry” shrugged.

“Do you have a dollar?” he asked.
