Less than a week after unveiling it, Nathan Sports is stressing that its new Muffin Belt does not include actual muffins, Dumb Runner has learned—a response prompted by scores of complaints from customers who felt duped.
Certain product shots of the belt, Nathan’s first ever storage product purpose-built for baked goods, show a model wearing the Muffin Belt with one large muffin in each of its rear muffin holders.
“NOTE: Muffins sold separately,” reads a small line of text added to the product’s description on Nathan’s website. Similar language is also appearing on the websites of major retailers selling the Muffin Belt.
While some runners appeared to appreciate the clarification, many characterized it as “too little, too late.”
“Great, NOW you tell us,” one commenter wrote on Nathan’s Instagram post sharing the new disclaimer.
“Wish I’d know this before I ordered my Muffin Belt,” wrote another. “Half the reason I bought it was because of those delicious-looking muffins.”
In a separate social media post, Nathan offered disgruntled customers a free PDF download of “our favorite yummy muffin recipes” and a 30% off coupon code for a future Nathan purchase, which appeared to further fan the flames.
“If we wanted to bake our own muffins we wouldn’t be ordering them online!” read one typical comment. “READ THE ROOM, NATHAN.”
Reached for comment, a Nathan Sports social media manager told Dumb Runner she was looking for another job.
