A local runner owns just one pair of running shoes, authorities say, leading them to conclude that the man is a psychopath.

The runner was identified as Anthony Perkins, 32, a hospitality worker; the shoes reportedly are a well-worn pair of ASICS Gel-Nimbus. Authorities concluded they are the only running shoes he owns after poring over Perkins’ social media accounts and online race photos and interviewing other runners close to the situation.

“What kind of runner owns just one pair of running shoes?” said Janet Leigh, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety. “A psychopath, that’s what kind.”

“We strongly urge anyone who encounters this man to give him a wide berth,” she added. “Do not engage him—even if it’s to offer to buy him a second pair of shoes.”

Among local runners, reactions to the news ranged from alarm to befuddlement.

“How are you supposed to rotate your shoes if you only have one pair?” said Bernard Herrmann, 58, a longtime runner. “And what happens if you wear your shoes in the rain and then want to run the next day, but your shoes are still wet? What then?”

“This guy is a lunatic,” he said.

The case against Perkins could get even more damning, officials said—the Department of Public Safety is now investigating reports that Perkins has logged more than 500 miles on his running shoes.

“If that’s true,” Leigh said, “then we truly are dealing with a monster. God help us all.”
