‘I Don’t Mind Being Called a Jogger,’ Says Woman Who, Technically, Isn’t Even Jogging

A local runner today said that being labeled a jogger doesn’t bother her, Dumb Runner has learned—though, according to multiple sources, she neither runs nor jogs, moving instead at a sort of quick shuffle.

Randi Brooks, 39, made the declaration during her daily 2-mile constitutional, in response to a neighbor’s greeting.

“Hey, Randi, nice day for a jog!” the neighbor said, before quickly adding, “I mean, run—you guys hate being called joggers, right?”

Brooks laughed.

“I don’t mind being called a jogger,” she said.

But that characterization isn’t accurate, either, said sources who said Brooks’ gait and pace don’t even meet the lower threshold of jogging.

“Honestly, it’s more of a quick walk,” said one. “Pretty slow pace, and at no point in time are both of her feet off the ground.”

“It’s weird, because there’s nothing wrong with walking,” the source added. “Why not just call yourself a walker, if that’s what you’re doing?”

Reached for comment, Brooks dismissed the comments as “gatekeeping.”

“If you run,” she said, “you’re a runner.”
